Supporting Local Law Enforcement

Working hard, pursuing dreams, raising a family – none of this can happen without public safety. It is the most basic service government can provide. Congressman Dreier has been an effective advocate for safety in the Foothills and he has stood with law enforcement since his first days in Congress. Congressman Dreier was honored by Justice for Homicide Victims for his work to crack down on cop-killers.

Whether it’s tackling gang violence, making sure California gets reimbursed for jailing illegal aliens, or supporting resources for first responders, Congressman Dreier has been unwavering in his commitment for reducing crime and protecting the peace.

  • Congressman Dreier successfully worked to increase funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP), which reimburses states and localities for the incarceration of illegal immigrants, to $400 million.
  • Congressman Dreier supported the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by securing federal funding for improvements, equipment and technology at various Sheriff’s stations in the region.
  • Congressman Dreier authored legislation to make it a federal crime to kill a peace officer and flee the country to escape prosecution. The bill adds substantial federal penalties by imposing a mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison for the murder of a public safety officer and an additional mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison for fleeing the country to avoid prosecution.
