Congressman Dreier has signed a petition that would bring a border security bill currently being blocked by the House Democratic Leadership up for debate.  The Secure America with Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act, H.R. 4088, addresses the need for a stronger employment verification system to stop the hiring of illegal immigrants.  Yet, the House Democratic Leadership is refusing to allow it to come up for a vote.  Dreier said he supports debating the bill, and would attempt to strengthen it with his own legislation that creates a counterfeit-proof Social Security card, H.R. 98.  “We need to do everything we can to stem the tide of illegal immigration.  I cannot understand why the Democrats don’t want to solve this problem.  My bill would enhance the SAVE Act by tackling the pervasive problem of identity theft.  H.R. 98 enjoys bipartisan support, as does the SAVE Act.  It’s time for the Democrats to have this debate and fix what’s broken once and for all.”  Dreier is the lead sponsor of H.R. 98, the Illegal Immigration Enforcement and Social Security Protection Act.  The bipartisan bill would create a counterfeit-proof Social Security card and would improve out employment verification system.
